Testing Different Camera Shots

As most of our shots we have decided to be close ups and tracking shots we thought we would experiment with the different angles and ways we can shoot to make each tracking shot look different. Above are the videos we experimented with using the tracking shot. We like the idea of tracking from scenery to the artist singing so will use that when filming our music video.

Inspiration On Camera And Edititng

The white wash on top of the video we quite like as it looks quite soft like our song which we will then contrast against the upsetting song.

The beginning shot by where it pans from in-between the trees to the person singing with the guitar is something that we want to use.

The shot at 0:18 seconds where it goes from black to a long shot of the scenery we would like to include in the beginning of the our music video. we also like the soft fade transitions between each shot.

tracking shot throughout - main shot used including close ups.

This is some camera work and editing used in breaking bad which we got inspiration from. We like the underwater shots and think we can use them with the go pro when doing the shots in the bath, we also like the dark effect that has been edited on but with a high contrast. The close up of the reflection in the pool with the water moving is something we also want to contribute into our music video. We liked he idea of the sound becoming distorted when going underwater and the use of the camera being half way in the water half way out, They are all things we want to experiment with and try adding to our music video.

Replicating her in the maze

In this tutorial above it shows how you can edit a ghost effect. We needed to learn this as we have decided to include two of our singer in some of the shots, which of course needs to be edited. Although we will not have it as a ghost, instead a guardian angel this allows us to get the concept of how we could go about doing this particular idea.

Camera Shots Inspiration

Ghost editing for herself running around

When filming the scene that we have decided to film in the maze we will use inspiration from all the different shot types above. We want to get as many different shot types into our music video as possible and by filming from all angles it allows the viewer to see around the main singer and the setting, without the camera just being on her. Above have used a range of close ups, medium shot, medium long shot, and long shots, all of which we will aim to include on our maze scene. We have also got the inspiration of the maze scene specifically from this advert.

In this tutorial above it shows how you can replicate someone. We needed to learn this as we have decided to include two of our singer in some of the shots, which of course needs to be edited. We'll add effects to one of the replicas so it looks like a guardian angel rather than just a twin. This allows us to expand on the concept that she's lost and trying to chase her past.

This is an amateur version of what we're trying to accomplish with the maze scene. I've realised that the quality of hampton courts maze is a lot better than heaver castles.

Lighting for woodland

Although the song itself is not calm and sweet. We want the lighting and scenery to reflect on this. Although we will have main lighting on the singer we also want decorative lighting to add to the mood we are trying to create. From the pictures above we want to include similar lighting in our outside woodland shots. We have also decided to include some create your own mood lighting which we researched how to do online. We got inspiration to do this from the bottom picture on the left.

Visual Look Of Our Music Video

As we want to include as many different camera shots we can in our music video we came across this particular video that shows many different shots that we can include particularly the extreme close up. The video also shows different camera angles which we have also taken inspiration from as we do not want it to be all eye level. We especially liked the undershot angle at 1:02.

As the theme of the costume hair and makeup is decided to be vintage we decided it would be good to learn how to actually create this. We want our video to look quite old fashioned with different hairstyles and costumes throughout. We got great inspiration from this video we found on youtube as it shows different vintage hairstyles and how we can achieve these. We want to try and include these styles into our music video.

As our artist is similar to Florence and the machine we thought it would be appropriate to have a look at her way of doing things in her music videos. We liked how the main location of the music video is set outside, something we also want to do. We also liked how it is not set in this particular time period, something that we also wanted to do for our video. We like how over dramatic Florence is when she sings which is something that also gives us inspiration to achieve when our actress is lip syncing for us.

This is another video of the decorative lighting that we would like to include in our music video to set the mod of calm and peaceful as a contrast on her messed up life.

We gained quite a lot of inspiration from the different shots in this video. As our main theme is reflection we wanted to include water quite a lot, also as a reference to washing away her troubles. The different shots of the water involved in this video we will try to include in our own as we like them and think they are very visually pleasing. We liked the focus of reflection on the moving water which is something we want to use to tell some of the story through.

As we want our video to be quite soft and mysterious we want to include lots of shots with a shallow depth of field. We found this video on youtube which shows different ways of how depth of field is used and we will used inspiration from this and the ways they have used it when including it in our own music video.

Our Pitch Script

Hayley: hello, the song we have decided to use is by an independent new artist, Holly Hayes, who has written a song called The Stunt.

Jennifer: The main theme of our music video will be based around the idea of reflection. Reflection in mirrors, water, lakes, reflecting on life and reflecting on others around you. Throughout the video it shows a lost teenage girl who is trying to find herself again. We decided on a teenage girl to relate more to our target audience.

Hayley: The teenage girl being lost will be portrayed in many ways. One of the scenes will be being set in a maze with the girl chasing her lost self around it, struggling for ways out. We have decided to give the music video quite a vintage look with the hair, costume, scenery and makeup to make our artist stand out as something different.

Jennifer: We have decided to create a narrative music video with a story line that makes the audience think and reflect. There will also be shots of her playing the guitar to show that she is the artist, loves music and actually has a talent and wrote the song herself. One of the scenes includes the artist with a guitar which is set by a lake and when looking in the reflection of the water she doesn't see herself but a flashback of her heartbreak.

Hayley: The mood we want to create in this music video is mainly hurt but also a lot of passion and love, we also want it to be quite sentimental to her. We are planning on having 2 older actors, a man and woman, who show glimpses of why she's hurt and the artist as the main character. These 2 actors are the mother and father who show glimpses of why she's hurt and flashbacks of them both arguing and the dad eventually leaving.

Jennifer: another scene relating to reflection will be set in a bath, showing her trying to wash away her troubles, attempting suicide and continuously failing. The viewer then finds out that she has some sort of gaurdian angel looking after her which is present to the audience as her, but with a glow around her figure. No matter how many times she try's to get lost in herself or attempt suicide the guardian angel makes her reflect and see the good that she has in her life. You see the angel following her around, chasing her, protecting her and allowing her to find herself.

Hayley: Some of the settings we have decided on for our music video is outside in fields, lakes and mazes as we also want our artist to have a hippie way about her. Although the story line itself is not calm we want the setting around her to be calm to contrast on her life. We have decided to do this by using stereotypical calm things; fairy lights, camp fires, candles, stars but with a smokey effect, representing her head not being clear and using dull colours, representing her depression.

Jennifer: over all the story line for the music video is a teenage girl lost since her dad abandoned her, it shows the constant pain she goes through without him and how unwanted she feels, it also shows throughout the video that the mysterious figure which u then realise is her guardian angel is the only thing keeping her going.

Hayley: the guardian angel version of herself will wear white, to show purity and at the end the video will reveal it's wings or halo so the audience understand and think ohhh that's what that was about. The main things we have used inspiration from is other videos such as ed sheeran - give me love, pink - perfect and Rihanna - stay. We have also used inspiration from adverts too such as the Nina Ricci perfume. Thank you for listening.

Target audience research

This is the first video we found which inspired us to relate to teenage girls especially about this problem of parents divorcing as it is now a common thing.

As our songs meaning is about a father who abandoned his daughter we thought it would be appropriate to do some research to find out how many single parent there are in just UK alone to see how big our audience could possibly be to not only he children, but the single mothers too. this is what we found out:

We also decided to look at the statistics for child abuse and neglect as well as this song could aim towards them aswell, helping them with their struggle. This is what we found-

The song chosen can also go out to anyone going through a hard time and trying to keep on going. We have decided to chose our target market to be teenage girls as there is an awful amount of pressure put on them.

We went on Holly's sound cloud to find out her fan base as these are the main target audience as they actually are the ones who like her music.

Inspirational Ideas For Our Music Video

Our Pitch

Our music video is to the song the stunt performed by Holly Hayes. The theme of our music video is based around the idea of reflection; mirrors, water, lakes, reflecting on life and reflecting on others. Throughout the music video it shows a lost teenage girl (appealing to our target audience) who is trying to find herself - this is portrayed through one of the scenes being set in a maze with her chasing herself.

We want the music video to be quite vintage with hair, costume, scenery and makeup and to make the viewer think. Although it is a narrative video, there will be shots of her with her playing her guitar. One shot of her playing the guitar is set by the lake and when she looks in the reflection she see's a flashback of her heartbreak. The mood we want to give off from the song is hurt but still with a lot of passion and love and in a way, sentimental to her. We are planning on having 2 actors, a man and woman, who show glimpses of why she is hurt and flashbacks of mum and dad arguing and dad leaving. We want to use a bath as a setting, to show her trying to wash away her troubles and failing then attempting suicide. The bath also works with the concept of reflection that we want to show throughout the music video. We also want the video to show her guardian angel looking over her, which is presented to look just like her, which only the audience can see. So no matter how many times she tries to kill herself or get lost in herself the guardian angel makes her reflect and see the good in life. You see it follow her around, chasing, protecting and allowing her to try and find herself.

We want the main setting of the music video to be filmed outside in fields, lakes and mazes. Although the story itself is not calm we want the setting around it to be to contrast on her life. We will do this by the use of fires, candles, a smokey effect ( smoke machine) fairy lights and quite dull colours.

The main story of the music video is a teenage girl lost since her dad walked out of her life suddenly and no longer wants anything to do with her. It shows the pain she is going through without him and how the guardian angel is the only thing keeping her going.

We have used inspiration particularly from an advert for Nina Ricci's perfume.

Concept for The Stunt

The concept that we have decided on for our music video was the artist reflecting on the negative within her life and then trying to confront it or run away, henceforth the maze scene and mirrors.

About The Target Market

This is a image of Holly Hayes Band Dawson-

As the genre of music Holly Hayes and her band Dawsons create is indie rock, the people that enjoy listening too and are fans of indie rock and Holly's target audience. Holly is a teenage girl and the rest of the members in the band are only teenagers the target audience is people of a similar age range that can relate to the lyrics she writes and sings and also the style that the band has.

Who Our Artist Is Like

We think that our artist, Holly Hayes, Is very similar to Florence Welch from Florence and the machine. We feel like they are both quite different and have a similar tone in their voices. Although they do not look similar, except a similar hairstyle they both try to make themselves individual and unlike the rest.

They are both lead female vocalists with an indie rock band playing for them in the background, although Florence has more band members than Holly. They are also both English singers/songwriters with an indie rock feel to their music making indie rock music listeners both of their target audience. Although a lot more famous than Holly, Florence Welch is competition as they are both aiming towards the same target audience for a fan base to allow them to succeed. Both Holly and Florence created their own bands and had and interest and studied music from an early age. Their voices sound very different and unusual from the rest of the singers and that is what made Florence Welch stand out to be a similar artist to Holly Hayes. Both of the ladies have a free spirited hippy style about them which makes them different from the mainstream artists.

The Stunt Lyrics And Lyrics Analysis

You've got this feeling that you found
You get the feeling when you come down
Another day in the same damn town
Too sick and tired to look around
Don't you worry, you're beautiful
Don't you worry, we've all been there before
Where you are, where you are
With your fears on fire and a wild desire
And you run so fast but you can't take flight
And are you alright cos' i don't think that you're fine
And just as she smiled a tear fell from her eye and she said
I'm an excellent mother
But I can't provide a father
I won't talk about your flaws cos' I am too important
I am too important
There are no words, that I could write or rehearse
I don't know how you sound, I don't know how you work
How you work
I tried to use my armour
But I was on the warfront
You are a terrible man, you pulled a terrible stunt
You pulled a terrible stunt
(Oooh's here)
I didn't say anything cos no one talks about it
We're all just too important to realise our flaws
Ohhhsss
I didn't say anything cos no one talks about it
We're all just too important to realise our flaws

We decided on the idea of the music video being about a broken hearted girl since her dad left her because of the lines "I'm an excellent mother, but i can't provide a father" and "You are a terrible man you pulled a terrible stunt" by using flashbacks it can show how she got to the dark place that she is in now, which will be of the mum and dad arguing. We also wanted a split personality or a guardian angel looking out for her from the lines "don't you worry you are beautiful" so it is that something that is keeping her going.

We also think the theme should be reflection as throughout the artist is reflecting on herself, the situation and her life. Instead of doing it like this we want to do it a different way by using mirrors etc, so she is literally reflecting on herself. A chasing scene will also be involved with her lost self we decided this from the line "and you run so fast but you can't take flight" we want to show her trying to run away from her troubles.

Digipack Hayley sam smith

This is Sam Smith's, in the lonely hour album cover, I chose this as my second recreation because i feel in doing this i could demonstrate my abilities to improvise. Because this specific album cover is relatively easy to remake i just have to adjust the lighting and contrast before adding the text.

Step 1: Firstly, I had to resize my picture so it had identical width and height to the original cover. To do this is copied and paste my picture onto powerpoint and used the cropping tool.

Step 2: Before adding the text I had to change the brightness of my photo. Because I didn't have access to the appropriate lighting and mine is much more intense than the original, to rectify this I imported my version into iPhoto and used the adjusting feature to change the warmth, tint, exposure, temperature and saturation.

.

Step 3: After editing my photo to be the closest copy of the original album cover, I put the image into Photoshop and tested multiple texts to find the most similar to the real title.

The text that was conveniently the closest to its original was 'Calibri (Body)'. Here are a few examples of various other texts I compared.

Step 4: By adding another layer on top of my final edited photo I then pasted the chosen text and positioned it on the top layer to get my final piece.
